When high-availability VMs make sense

High availability pays off wherever outages get expensive – whether through lost revenue, missed orders, SLA obligations or internal processes that must not come to a halt.

For which customers & projects?

  • Companies with business-critical applications (ERP, CRM, DMS, custom software)
  • Online shops & SaaS platforms with clear availability targets and SLAs
  • Agencies & IT service providers with customer projects that must “always” be online
  • Communication & collaboration systems (VoIP, chat, intranet, portals)
  • Internal systems that need to be available 24/7 (production & logistics environments)

What goals does it achieve?

  • Significantly reduced outage risk thanks to redundant VMware clusters
  • Planned maintenance windows without downtime by moving VMs within the cluster
  • Stable performance even when hardware fails
  • Optional site redundancy: operation across two separate sites – the second via a partner data center
  • Backup & recovery strategies tailored to your workloads

Why we can reliably offer high-availability VMs

Behind our high-availability VMs is a VMware-based enterprise infrastructure: redundant hosts, shared storage, a multi-tier network and end-to-end monitoring. This is the technical foundation on which we plan and operate demanding HA scenarios together with you.

Cluster of multiple VMware hosts

Your VMs run on a cluster of multiple VMware hosts. If a host fails, workloads can be moved to other hosts – the basis for true high availability rather than isolated single systems.

Shared storage with NVMe tiers

The VMs use central storage systems with fast NVMe tiers. This means data isn't tied to a single host and remains usable within the cluster during maintenance or failures.

Redundant network design

Multiple switches, separate paths and up to 10 Gbit/s connectivity ensure that network traffic keeps flowing reliably even during disruptions – ideal for APIs, VPN setups and internal connections.

Monitoring & automated checks

Central monitoring systems watch hosts, storage and VMs. Alert thresholds, notifications and regular health checks help detect problems early and respond proactively.

Standardized operating processes

Maintenance, updates and changes follow clearly defined processes. This makes adjustments plannable and repeatable – no “tinkering” on production systems.

An experienced team behind it

Behind the platform is a team that works with VMware, Linux and Windows servers as well as network and storage topics every day. This experience flows directly into the design, operation and support of your environment.

Transparent management & monitoring of your HA environment

Your high-availability VMs are easy to manage: adjust resources, console access, reboots, templates, snapshots and more – depending on the scenario, directly via a central management panel or in close coordination with our team.

In addition, monitoring and alerting concepts can be integrated that fit your setup exactly – from simple system monitoring to complex dashboards and notifications to your team.

Four steps to your high-availability VM platform

Instead of ill-fitting standard packages, we develop the right solution together with you – from the first idea to ongoing operation.

1. Requirements workshop

We talk about applications, user numbers, load profiles, SLA requirements and budget. Based on this information, we outline a suitable HA architecture.

2. Architecture & quote

You receive a concrete recommendation including sizing, backup strategy, an optional second site and a transparent price quote.

3. Implementation & migration

We set up the environment, support test phases and – if desired – the migration of your existing systems to the new platform.

4. Operation & evolution

After go-live, we continue to support you: monitoring, adjustments, growth and new requirements are integrated into the platform together.

If it doesn't need to be highly available: standard VPS

Not every project needs a high-availability setup with a VMware cluster and a second site. If you're looking for a more cost-effective solution for smaller or less critical workloads, our classic VPS plans are a very good alternative.

You still benefit from SSD/NVMe storage, 1 Gbit/s connectivity and a German data center – but without the additional effort and cost of an HA architecture.

Frequently asked questions about high-availability VMs

Here we answer some common questions about the design, technology and economics of our HA solutions. For anything beyond that, it's best to talk in person.

With high-availability VMs, your systems run on a redundant VMware cluster. If a host fails, other hosts automatically take over the workloads. Backup and site-redundancy concepts can also be implemented. Regular VPS are sufficient for many scenarios, but don't offer this kind of high availability.

High availability is particularly useful for systems where downtime has a directly measurable impact – such as online shops, SaaS platforms, communication systems, ERP and CRM solutions or business-critical line-of-business applications. Redundant structures help reduce business risks.

For high-availability VMs, we work exclusively with custom quotes. Every environment has different requirements for resources, SLA, backup and architecture. Together we clarify your needs and develop a solution that fits your project technically and economically.

Yes. We plan your environment so that growth is possible – whether through more vCores, additional RAM, more storage or additional VMs. It's important that we take these growth goals into account during the design phase to plan reserves and scaling paths properly.

In many cases, existing systems can be migrated – either through a fresh installation and data transfer or through specially tailored migration scenarios. The exact approach depends heavily on your current environment. We're happy to discuss it with you and plan the next steps.

We offer site redundancy in three levels – depending on how quickly and how automatically the second site should take over. The second site is provided via a partner data center and planned per project:
  • Option 1 – Veeam DR: replicated backups at the second site, restart there when needed.
  • Option 2 – vSAN Metro HA: storage spans both sites, the failure of one site is absorbed without data loss.
  • Option 3 – Metro HA + SRM: additionally an orchestrated failover via Site Recovery Manager – with a defined sequence and a testable procedure.
Which level fits depends on your availability goals and budget. We'll go through it together and recommend the option that suits your use case.

For context: the two sites are around 10 km apart. That is site redundancy – not geo-redundancy in the sense of the German BSI criteria, which recommend considerably greater distances. If your use case requires true geo-redundancy, please tell us and we will plan accordingly.
